Rap and Hip Hop star Drake recently released his track What Did I Miss? and used Bitcoin’s unpredictable price swings as an analogy to describe his untrustworthy friends. The song premiered live on July 4, the American Independence Day, on a YouTube stream titled “ICEMAN EPISODE ONE” where the artist delved into betrayal of his friends.
The “diss track” has already become a popular choice among the internet community, with many joining the Drake bandwagon and jamming to it. Interestingly, many crypto users are interested in this song even though it doesn’t portray the digital currency in a very positive light because they love banter.
The Lyrics
The song What Did I Miss? immediately starts with the elephant in the room: betrayal. Drake explains, using some vulgar vocabulary, how a friend used to stand next to him but eventually took advantage of his fame and backstabbed him at the first opportunity, supporting a “hater.” The lyrics go on for several minutes before we reach the climax, and here is what he rapped at the end regarding Bitcoin:
“You switched on the guys and supported a hater, let’s go.
What’s the getback for n*#$s? It’s TBD.
I look at this shit like a BTC.
Could be down this week, then I’m up next week.”
Basically, what Drake is implying is that instead of enjoying a steady relationship, it is all extremely volatile like Bitcoin’s price chart. He obviously hates this unstable setup and is using rap as a medium to vent his emotions.
Drake is very likely dissing against rapper Kendrick Lamar, with whom he had a major public falling out in 2024.
What Drove Drake Against Bitcoin?
This is not the first time Drake has delved into the cryptocurrency sector. He has a history of high-risk moves in the digital asset market, and not many of them have proven successful. He made two highly risky sports bets on a National Basketball Association (NBA) title match and a National Hockey League (NHL) Stanley Cup Final in 2024, losing $1 million in Bitcoin. Both the Dallas Mavericks of the NBA and the Edmonton Oilers of the NHL failed to win their matches, and with them, Drake’s confidence in the digital currency.
Obviously, Drake has to understand that his risky moves were the reason behind the major loss, rather than the underlying digital currency he used to make those bets. But, rap art has a tendency to go melodramatic, and this is what can be expected from him.
The Kendrick-Drake feud is likely to continue in the near future with further diss tracks in the works by both stars. Crypto users will be hoping for further Bitcoin mentions as the heated rivalry continues and garners more media coverage.
